Vice President’s Message
|
 |
Hello Everyone,
June is National Indigenous Peoples Month and a chance for us all to honor and celebrate the culture of our First Nations, Inuit, and Metis People across BC. It is also a time when we can reflect on the impact of reconciliation and how we can contribute.
When I first came to Canada 25 years ago, I had no insight into the Indigenous history of Canada. The stories I heard were not about land or the policies designed to Westernize such as displacing children from their homes into residential schools. I am still learning about Indigenous culture and my role.
|
One of the areas that I have always been drawn to is the use of storytelling as a communication tool. I was recently reminded about the importance of storytelling in coaching by an Indigenous coach. In coaching, we are often taught to keep the story short and get to the agreement or contract. Yet the story usually tells us where the real issue lies. In my coaching practice, I have started to allow the story to unfold and be more curious about the content. In doing so I have found a greater depth of connection and understanding that helps me be a better coach.

I invite you all to take time this month to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's 94 Calls to Action .

ICF Resource Spotlights

Member Resource Groups: A New Opportunity to Foster DEIB
We recognize that barriers stand in the way of some individuals in the coaching community from becoming ICF members, growing as coaches, accessing certain opportunities, or gaining a sense of belonging. ICF Member Resource Groups (MRGs) aim to dismantle these barriers and overcome obstacles that impede the growth and inclusion of diverse communities in the coaching profession.
MRGs offer an opportunity for underrepresented ICF members, stakeholders, and allies to have a space to share, develop, and network with one another. Individuals who participate in these groups will also have access to different resources, including scholarship opportunities, workshops, and other event and course offerings.
|
 |
As an ICF member, these groups are free to you, and you can participate in any or all of the following MRGs:
-
BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) aims to create a safe and productive space for coaches of all racial and ethnic backgrounds interested in promoting racial equity in coaching.
-
Persons with Disabilities supports those who have experiences with disabilities, whether as a coach, client, or ally.
-
Young Professionals (40 and under) focuses on developing the next generation of leaders in coaching.
Through these MRGs, we hope you will help us foster a richer and more vibrant community and a profession that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
