National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - A Time to Reflect, Learn, and Take Action

Canadian history that resulted in the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families and communities, and the imposition of Western cultural and religious values on Indigenous peoples.

The impacts of this system continue to be felt today, as Indigenous communities continue to grapple with the intergenerational trauma and loss of cultural identity caused by residential schools.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation provides one of the many opportunities to acknowledge the harms caused by residential schools and to commit to a path of reconciliation and healing. This can involve learning about the history and legacy of residential schools, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives and organizations, and working towards the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.

As coaches, it is important to recognize the unique challenges and experiences facing Indigenous peoples in Canada, and to work towards creating a culture of understanding, empathy, and inclusion. This can involve being part of opportunities that allow us to educate ourselves and others about Indigenous cultures and traditions, promote respect for Indigenous rights and sovereignty, and support initiatives that advocate for equity and justice for Indigenous communities.

Recently, I have had the honor of working with some Indigenous clients and I will be forever grateful for the education I was provided as a coach and an educator. Through my clients’ patience and openness, I hope to be a better coach in service of my clients that have differing identities than my own.
